The founder of this plantation was Eno Nosare, who took a government lease over land in the Ivingoi area in the late 1980s. He & his family developed the plantation progressively planting out the boundaries. Eno passed on & the plantation management is now with his son & grandson.
Highland Organic Agriculture Cooperative is the longest continuously operating Fairtrade-certified organisations in the Pacific; in Okapa, it maintains & develops roads for the local growers, providing further employment for locals. Members receive pulping machines for members, & the coop has its own mill, retaining more income for the 2600 smallholder members.
The red ripe coffee cherry is harvested & pulped weekly during the season. The wet process requires fermentation for 36 hours & a thorough washing thereafter. The parchment is dried on covered raised beds with constant air circulation around the bean which makes for a quality cup as opposed to other drying techniques. This process gives Eno micro lot its distinct cupping quality.
Arusha coffee is known for its compelling flavors. It has a spicy mix of chocolate, molasses, raisin, & roasted praline flavor notes, & the best beans are imbued with a deep bitter earthiness & balanced by bright acidity. The prevailing aroma is powerfully nutty.
