After plenty of joyful cupping (and a few coffee-stained shirts), we reckon Okapa shines brightest brewed as a plunger or filter pour over. It’s a delightfully clean black coffee with deep, sweet, honeyed depth.
We were lucky to welcome Mitchell, the co-op leader from Okapa, to Jasper HQ recently. He shared powerful stories about the impact Fairtrade premiums have had on his community. Mitchell comes from generations of coffee growers—his grandfather and father both farmed the same land he now stewards.
Okapa is the oldest Fairtrade-certified region in Papua New Guinea—over 18 years strong. With Fairtrade support, the community has built classrooms, improved access to clean water, installed coffee pulpers, and upgraded infrastructure in schools, hospitals, churches, and nearby villages.
One of their biggest challenges? The roads. Moving 50kg bags of coffee used to take over eight hours on rough terrain. Thanks to Fairtrade funding, new roadworks have halved that time—bringing huge relief to local farmers.
Every cup of Okapa helps keep that progress going.
So drink up, and know you’re part of something good.
