    The Producer

La Bastilla Farm was established in 2003 when the company took over two abandoned estates in the Jinotega/Matagalpa region. Over the following 16 years, the farms were replanted with a new diverse range of varietals, and infrastructure was renewed including roads, living quarters and, mill and processing plant. Certified Rainforest Alliance provides environmental policies, as well as groundwork to establish a unique education project giving opportunities to young children and adolescents in the local area.

    The Finca (the Farm)

La Bastilla is the only specialty Arabica coffee in Nicaragua with a fully integrated production process, from cherry-picking to export bags, all done at the farm.  The production of special, certified rainforest alliance coffee is nowadays around 4000 bags of 69kgs.  They are currently working on a coffee plantation renovation program, which will elevate the yield to 7000 bags within the next five years.

The farm is characterised by its microclimates, its shade trees, and its volcanic soil. In the end, they obtain very special coffee qualities, and we describe the coffee profiles as very balanced and sweet, with good acidity, body, and complex aromas

    Social Impact

La Bastilla is located in an extremely rural area, with the closest official school located 6km away.  The company's vision to support the community by giving them the tools to thrive led them to fund a small school for the children of the employees in 2003.  At first, the school only had two primary teachers and 30 students, fast forward, they have now managed to build a new school on their farm, that has over 200 students attending, and employs 6 teachers.

    What is Maragogype?

Maragogype is a coffee varient, known for its large bean size.  Some other common coffee varietals are Cattura, Geisha, Typica & Bourbon, just to name a few.  Maragogype is often referred to as 'Elephant bean' due to its being around twice the size of other coffee varietals after roasting.
