About Ethiopia Yirgacheffe

Tasting notes

Almond | Apricot | Chocolate

Rated the best-tasting black and milk coffee on supermarket shelves by The Guardian Australia, this single origin is seriously good.

We love it black — it’s a slow sipper, full of nuance. Roasted with care in Melbourne, each cup carries rich cocoa notes, followed by a smooth finish of sweet apricot and toasted almond.

"It was a reminder of what coffee can be: complex, bright and evocative of flavours not usually associated with coffee... This one was like drinking the aroma of apricots, so powerfully so that I could have been convinced it contained natural or artificial stone fruit (it does not)... it’s easily the most interesting option in the market."
- Nick Jordan. The Guardian.

Don't rush it.
Best savoured slowly.

Region: Kochore
Altitude: 1400-2400m

Origin story

Tucked away in the heart of Ethiopia, the lush region of Yirgacheffe is steeped in a rich coffee-growing heritage. With its rolling green hills and vibrant local culture, it’s home to some of the most sought-after and celebrated coffees in the world.

This coffee is grown under the YCFCU which is a group of small organic co-operatives we have been working with for decades.

When first approached by World Vision to partner with them on this project we liked the idea. Once we had tasted Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Hama, we LOVED it! What a pleasure to be able to support World Vision in their work in Ethiopia, and support these farmers by enjoying one of the most beautiful coffees we have ever come across.

A percentage of our profits from sales of this coffee has been returned directly back into the area development project with HAMA Coop, at Kochore in Yirgacheffe.

Our Yirgacheffe is an elegant well structured, all consuming coffee experience. It starts with immediate sweet stone fruit, nectarine or apricot, then gains austerity in the mid palate with toasted almonds and soft milk chocolate to smooth the way for sip after sip. As a long black…memorable, and the amazing flavours just last longer.

    Distinct

Subtle balanced flavours with a hint of pistachio, a dryness that doesn’t diminish lasting but gentle coffee notes. Would buy again but remembered it from a decade ago.

The only coffee I drink now

This is so much better than any other coffee bean I have bought it is ridiculous. As soon as you cut open the bag and smell it, you'll know what I am talking about. Most coffees just seem to want to offer a darker and darker roast, like drinking coffee is supposed to be some sort of test of flavour endurance. This stuff was light, complex and flavourful - cofee meant for drinking, not to try and show off with some sort of "Xtra super strong coffee" label. I get this shipped 3000km because I can't drink anything else now, it's that good.
