Origin story

We have been buying coffee from East Timor for over two decades with a strong grower relationship. We love having the opportunity to share this wonderful coffee with you.

At Jasper Coffee, we have been roasting East Timor beans since 1998. The earlier lots were from Mt Ramalu, but late in 2000, we moved to the wonderful creamy bodied Maubisse coffee. This coop coffee had more consistency and the quality of flavours elevated. This was achieved by the attention to quality picking, better agronomy practices, and introduction of quality washed processing, along with close attention to the parchment drying.

By 2003, this Maubisse coffee was the first Fairtrade Certified and Organic Certified coffee introduced for roasting to Australia, along with the COOCAFE Fairtrade beans from Costa Rica. Jasper Coffee was the first licenced Fairtrade roaster in Australia and without the initiative of H.A. Bennetts, the Importers, Fairtrade would not be where it has risen today in the Australian market.

This East Timor Maubisse coffee through CCT Coop, was truly the vehicle of Fairtrade in the beginning. While it no longer Fairtrade certified, still support this co-op with their expertly grown coffee practices.

Throughout the years, through coffee sales of East Timor Maubisse Organic, the Coop has built 8 Medical Care Stations, including a Birthing Center along with 23 mobile medical facilities. These have been used by 2000 people monthly, and now are supported with solar operated mobile phone charging ports to allow full communication with these remote clinics.

    Great Latte

Makes for a great flat white on almond milk. Doesn’t seperate and has a nice strong taste but not that acidic.

    Long time favourite coffee

I have been drinking the East Timor Maubisse since about 2000. I started drinking it after the Indonesians wrecked East Timor when the Timorese seceded and the Indonesians left the country and trashed it on the way out. I wanted to do something to help them get back on their feet. It turned out I liked their coffee too. Originally I was able to buy it at my local supermarket (Maxi, in Upper Ferntree Gully) but they have recently been closed so I searched for an alternative source. There doesn't appear to be any retail outlets forJasper Coffee in my area so I went to direct mail order. The Maubisse ticks all the boxes; East Timor source, organic, fair trade and a great taste . I use a Macpac, hiking, metal coffee filter straight into the cup from the kettle at 92 degrees Celsius and a fresh medium grind.
