How to Brew - French Press / Plunger

12 November, 2021 2 min read

Brewing with a Plunger is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to brew at home. It is consistent, delicious, easy to clean up and hard to make a mistake!

If you don't have an French Press/Plunger, don't despair, you can pick one up in our equipment and accessories section.

Before your brew: Depending on how strong you want to brew your coffee, we recommend 60g ground coffee per litre of water. So, for a big mug, try 18-20g coffee and 300ml water.

Step 1

Bring your filtered water to the boil.

☕ Top Tips
Using a ratio of 1g of coffee to 16g of water will give you a good result every time.

Step 2

While you are waiting, we like to season the plunger with some hot water first. Swirl it around, then empty the water out in preparation for your ground coffee

☕ Top Tips
If you like your coffee a little stronger, you can decrease your ratio to 1:14 or 1:15, brewing for longer than 4 minutes or use a finer grind.

Step 3

Freshly ground coffee is best, but if you do not have a grinder, pre-ground coffee is fine.  Add the dry ground coffee to the plunger. This should be quite coarse and should almost feel like granulated sugar.

☕ Top Tip
If you’re finding it hard to plunge, try making your grind coarser, or decreasing the amount of coffee.  You can also pick up a bag of your favourite coffee and set the grind preference to French Press/Plunger, to get your favourite Jasper brew ready for Plunger perfection.

Step 4

Measure out your required water. Pour the water over the ground coffee, ensuring all the grinds are saturated, then give the coffee a vigorous stir. Start your timer. Let it brew for 90 seconds, and then give it another good stir. Now let it brew for 3 more minutes.  Total brewing time should be no longer than 5 minutes.

Step 5

With firm and steady force and slowly push the plunger down until you can no longer push. Now the only thing left to do is to sit back, pour, drink and enjoy!
