With a history reaching back to 1838 in Jamaica, today's Jamaica Blue Mountain is grown on the Wallenford Estate, within a small & strictly defined region in the Eastern Blue Mountains at 1,500-2,400 MASL - one of the highest coffee regions in the world. Coffee produced here is considered by industry experts to be the 'cream of the crop'. This micro environment with its unique & endangered species of fauna & flora has been recognised by UNESCO. Steep mountain slopes at high altitude with fertile soil rich in iron & minerals, warm Caribbean temperatures, which don't fluctuate much seasonably, plentiful rainfall & a thick Blue Mountain mist (that envelops the hillsides each afternoon) emulates a shade grown micro climate, & creates the perfect environmental conditions in which to grow this elusive bean.
Jamaica Blue Mountain producers are among the best paid producers & certainly the best paid workers in Jamaica. They receive 50% of the revenue of the crop along with medical & other support from the parent company. Furthermore, the sharing of knowledge surrounding agricultural processes, conservation tactics, & other farming practices are provided to help innovate & broaden the way producers think about growing coffee.
