As Hippies of the 70’s we were well versed in Organics, Bio-Dynamics, Compost, Rachel Carson, and treading lightly on the planet.

Sustainability has always been foundational to the way we choose to go about our business. We consciously choose our coffees, with respect to how the product is grown and harvested… preferably under Organic and Shade Grown conditions, within an economically sustainable environment. Fundamental to this, we are always concerned for the economic and social well being and living standards of the people who produce our coffees.

Beyond the Silent Spring

After 5 arduous months of answering hundreds of questions about the operations, sustainability, morality, ethics , governance and supplier relationships of our Company, Jasper  Coffee has become the first and only coffee company   in Australia to join the International ranks and standing of companies, who can claim to be at the highest World standing of  Sustainability.

Jasper Coffee is now a B Corp Certified Company.

This Certification sits above and compliments Fairtrade, Organic and Carbon Neutral and truly demonstrates that we care about the way we operate and think.

This Certification is an acclamation that our business is a force for good. Through our products and practices, we aspire and demonstrate benefits and relationship for our stakeholders.

In this, Jasper Coffee recognises that we are merely a conduit between the Coffee Producers and the Consumers. Through our efforts we have supported communities at origin who struggle to become self- sufficient.

Our Company, along with all our staff, accept that we all rely on each other to sustain a livelihood where environment, product, sales and quality of life and workplace, all matter. So beyond the manifestation of Fairtrade, Organic, Carbon Neutrality, Jasper Coffee now harnesses all these significant milestones under the umbrella of B Corp.

We have met the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, transparency, governance and accountability, and so we have used the power of markets and relationships to help solve just some social and environmental problems.

We recognise, as in the expression of Artist, David Thomas, just what does matter by what our matter does.

We are very pleased that our customers have been very invested in our journey and I thank you for being part of us…and we also thank Rachel Carson for enlightening our perspective of the World in her visionary writings in ‘Silent Spring” back in the Seventies.

Our Sustainability – Because it Matters

Upon entering the Coffee World, our Sustainable Journey began in 1989.

Understanding the waste to landfill dilemma of packaging, our first option for all our products was cello. Though this material lacked the impervious barrier, and the light barrier, we made a stand to prefer the compostable capacity, and its source from renewable materials. By 1993 we had to abandon this material through lack of supply.

Our first Organic coffee was from PNG, which was growing wild in the bush and collected by families for cash income. A United Nations probe to uncover sustainable food crops around the World, found just that, in the remote mountains north of Lae…the very beans we sold. This coffee could never be Certified Organic, just because of its topographic remoteness. We still have and still love this coffee today…Wild New Guinea.

Invested in a new Lilla Roaster in 2000. The Lilla smokeless exhaust emissions were the lowest available from any roaster, and the ergonomic efficiency elevated this design as the most sustainable roaster of the time. Unlike most other roasters, the Lilla does not require the enormous extra energy to fire an afterburner…lowering our energy requirements significantly.

  • 2003 – Jasper Coffee became the first Australian Fairtrade Licensed commercial roaster, and foundation members of FTAANZ.
  • Our Roastery became Organic Certified in 2003
  • First to introduce Fairtrade Organic (FTO) Sugar, FTO Drinking Chocolate, FTO Pods, FTO Instant Coffee
  • 2005 -  Introduced Café Femenino to Australia – an economic and socially sustainable program within the Peruvian PROSASSA Penachi Fairtrade Coop
  • 2006 – Participated in Green Fleet program, offsetting the miles of our motions.
  • 2006 – Awarded Sustainability Grant for an Audit Project to determine energy it takes to produce 1kg coffee beans and 1 cup of coffee.
  • 2007 - Introduced compostable triple walled paper Take Away cups
  • In 2008 delivered FTO coffee for the first time to 68% of all Domestic Airlines
  • In 2009 Jasper Coffee becomes Australia’s first Certified 100% Carbon Neutral Coffee Company

Jasper Coffee… measuring our footprint so you can reduce yours… because it matters!

How do I know its Certified Organic?

Certified Organic coffee means no inorganic chemicals or pesticides are used in producing the coffee. The strict standards of the Australian Certified Organic system go further, demanding no chemicals are used in the ENTIRE supply chain, including roasting and handling here in Australia. This assures you there is no cross contamination with non-organic products. Our Roasting Plant is compliant and Certified with Australian Certified Organic(ACO).

Look for a certification logo. If the product is roasted or packed here in Australia, look for an Australian Certification ID, as your guarantee. Our coffees, sugar, drinking chocolate, espresso cleaning powder, are certified by Australian Certified Organic (bud logo) and this system is administered by the Biological Farmers Association

Fairtrade farmers in Honduras, prepare compost and use forest fungus mixed with manure  fermented in water, to use as a fungicide, to retain their Organic Certification, in their battle against La Roya disease.

Our Processor ID number is 10030.

Carbon Neutral

What is Carbon Neutral?

Your daily cup of coffee might just be costing you more than you think. Research from the Carbon Reduction Institute shows each latté consumed has the same environmental impact as leaving your 60 watt bathroom light globe on for 3 hours. Times that by 2 lattés a day, 5 times a week and over a year you just left that light globe on for 2 months.

By calculating our footprint for production, shipping, packaging, airflights, power, staff transit to work, water and vehicles among all else, Jasper Coffee has determined the real cost of consuming the revered flat white that keeps us perky during the day.

The impact of climate change is not just in Antarctica. In the Tropics where the luscious caffeine crop grows, farmers are noticing unusual weather changes with extended heavy rains in Peru and Colombia resulting in volume shortfalls around 30%. Where once the fear was of frost in Brazil, now the dread of drought is the real consequence of Climate Change. This annually stirs gulps of price driven shivers predicting the new annual price of coffee in the market, set against the horror prospects of depleted crops.

By becoming a 100% Carbon Neutral Coffee company in 2009, our vision of collecting data and taking responsibility for our footprint and our carbon emissions has come to fruition.

A Carbon Credit represents one Tonne of CO2 equivalent Greenhouse gas that has been prevented from entering the atmosphere. These emissions are offset by a third party who reduces greenhouse gases on our behalf, through a Carbon Offset Project.

The Carbon Reduction Institute has assessed our carbon credits to consider, accreditation; environmental; additionality; financial additionality; leakage; permanence and additional social or economic benefits.

We source our carbon credits from projects that meet the above criteria. These carbon offsets are real, measurable, permanent, additional and independently verified. Jasper Coffee uses only the International Gold Standard Certification of verifiable carbon credits, through the Clean Development Mechanism, as prescribed under the Kyoto Protocol.

Our Carbon Neutrality is substantiated and supported by best practice auditing and carbon emissions accounting methods.

Having measured our carbon emissions we have now offset our operations with amazing renewable energy projects in India.

Electricity through India is generally fired from the coal powered grid, thus leading to high greenhouse gas emissions. New equipment fired by Biomass, mainly from local agricultural waste and other non- renewable biomass residues, is now used to generate the required energy for many industrial operations.

Now whole regions benefit from the sale and profits from the resultant carbon credits, and the cleaner, environmentally friendly fuel source. Very often, the investment required for installation of this new equipment, could not be raised without the revenue from sales of carbon credits.

However, we continue to find ways to directly reduce our emissions from our operations. These include, transitioning to Hybrid vehicles (Prius) ; introduction of compostable material for packaging; changing all lighting to L.E.D. or low heat/wattage fluorescent; engaging waste collection to separate compostable /landfill/cardboard; installing latest roasting equipment with zero atmospheric emissions and reducing gas and electricity consumption by 38%/22%; introduction of compostable Take Away cups, among other means.

Jasper Coffee is dedicated to joining the fight against climate change and urges other organisations across the country to do the same. The company’s greenhouse gas inventory is audited annually and approved by the Carbon Reduction Institute.

Every cup of coffee has a footprint. By becoming a 100% Carbon Neutral Coffee Company, Jasper Coffee is leading the way in creating a sustainable future. It means you can now enjoy your coffee with conscience.

So perk up, and don’t forget to switch off that light!

Over the years, we have always been conscious of the coffees we choose with respect to sustainability. We have 24 Shadegrown coffees and 12 of these are Fairtrade Organic Certified coffees.

Coffee is grown in the tropics, and often biodiverse equatorial rainforests are cut down to make way for high yield coffee plantations or even for growing the cash crop chat, as in Ethiopia.

However, Shadegrown means the coffee trees are planted under an indigenous or mixed forest canopy. This provides natural habitat and food for local wildlife as well as a vital haven for migratory birds. Traditionally in Ethiopia, seedlings are transplanted to the forests along with a taller companion tree seedling to maintain the integrity of forest canopy for the coffee trees.

These sustainable coffee crops protect a biodiverse environment and are often the sole source of cash income for the indigenous populations that produce them. In PNG, these shade grown coffee trees are protected with gusto by the local village coffee growers. Here, much coffee grows wild in the forest and is nurtured as Certified Organic. An errant producer, who dared to violate this rigour by introducing artificial fertilizer to the forest grown coffee, found he was rejected from the community for 7 years, along with his use of the forest for his coffee.

With habitat destruction ravaging equatorial rainforests, intelligent coffee producers are now planning for a sustainable future by planting coffee trees under an indigenous forest canopy cover. In Sidamo Ethiopia, heirloom and disease resistant varietals, are replanted into the forests from where they came as mature fruiting trees. With the leaf litter from the forests, the soil is enriched with humus and vital water retention to help the bacteria and soil flora invigorate soil health, which in turn, regenerates the economic cycle of harvesting the forest. Healthy Shadegrown coffee trees at Copan, Honduras, ensures farmers of sustainable production of their Organic coffee crop.

Jasper Coffee consciously chooses to increase the number of shadegrown coffees that we offer. Look for our ‘tree symbol’ for Shade Grown coffees or see our full product list for the whole range.
