Why the Women of Penachi are Rejoicing   

Despite numerous advances in many parts of the world, the marginalisation and oppression of women still occurs.  Especially in areas of extreme poverty, such as the rural communities of Peru.

But now with Café Femenino Fairtrade & Organic premiums, the dreams of female coffee farmers is a reality.  In a World First, this coffee from the Penachi region in Peru is produced by women only.  This business venture is the beginning of breaking the cycle of abuse and poverty by providing direct income to the women and raising their self esteem.

True Ownership

To join this coffee Cooperative the women must own the land.  They manage all farm activities, prepare the terrain, nurseries and compost.  They fertilise the soil, prepare biofertilisers as part of the organic certificiation as well as harvesting, depulping, fermenting and drying the coffee.  They are passionately committed to improving the quality of their coffee, their Cooperative and Equality in life.

Says Maria Sabino Hernandez Queva "I tell the women they must use their intelligence and chose the right times to talk to their husbands about Café Femenino.  God didn't create women to be less equal."

"Women feel happy about Café Femenino, they sell their coffee seperately and the men are pleased to see the women get more money.  Many years ago women were abused and had no protection.  It has changed.  Because we can protect and defend ourselves.  We women decide how we are going to spend our money."

Since July 2005, Jasper Coffee female staff have been roasting this Inca Gold, in keeping with the spirit of the Cafe Femenino project.  And so the womens link is complete... Café Femenino grown, harvested, processed, administered and roasted by women.

In August 2005, Director Merilyn Parker visited the women growers to celebrate their dream to sell their coffee to the world.  With money in their pockets and a smile on their faces, no wonder the women of Northern Peru are rejoicing!

Café Femenino coffee is being sold at a premium above the Fairtrade price and a portion of profits from Cooperative sales, funds Leadership training.  In addition Jasper Coffee commits a levy from Australian sales of roasted beans to support much needed books and education facilities.
