What the?!! For quite some time we have debated the merits of a premium espresso and fresh coffee roaster, dipping into the murky brew of Instant coffee. With customers demanding an Ethical alternative in an Instant, we searched the globe for one that would meet our strict quality standards. We were not confident.

But alas unbelievably we found one! It took many palate painful, blind tasting sessions against competitor products to find this premium winner from Colombian. Unlike most Instants, this coffee is made from 100% Arabica beans and is also freeze dried to retain its succulent flavour profile.

Certified Fairtrade and Organic, this coffee is sustainably grown on the highest mountain slopes in Colombia, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta by native Indians. Here life is tough and often violent. Whilst raising their standard of living through FAIRTRADE, these families strive to maintain their traditional culture and heritage, through sustainable organic farming practices.

The snow capped mountain is within sight of the sea and is a geographical hotspot declared by UNESCO as a ‘Reserve of Mankind and the Biosphere’. This is because it is one of the most important sources of water on earth and where many tropical ecosystems in South America converge. The mountainous, jungle region is very rich in flora and fauna, with over 3,000 plants species and 514 bird species.

The Fairtrade premium has enabled them to bridge the income gap between harvests, establish their own medical centre and dentist clinic, improve access to running water and housing, purchase books and schools uniforms and even the establishment of a plant nursery. Now the growers have a vision of owning their own sugar mill!

At Jasper we have debated the merits of helping these poor farmers versus selling locally produced sugar. Unlike here in Australia, these growers do not have access to a legal framework that protects their rights and a world class welfare and health system. We have chosen to give these farmers a better deal and to fairly reward their work.
